He starts to work on Micah, getting his attention. When she finally finds a new relationship, he starts to slowly insert himself in her new life.Īt first, it’s small things. He destroyed Katie’s life, killed her mother, burned her house down, and then follows he stalks her from town to town, never leaving her alone. The demon is like an abusive, narcissistic ex. That said, I feel compelled to respond to this thread because there is something toxic here, but it’s not my character in the movie.įirst, I want to say that Paranormal Activity is a metaphor for abuse, but the perpetrator isn’t Micah-it’s the demon. We really must have done our job and created something that struck a chord. I’m glad that everyone is so invested in discussing Paranormal Activity, even after all this time. I hope I am that brave if ever faced with the same situation. He leaped out of bed to run to her, not knowing what was waiting for him. Even if I were to stand by my original interpretation, that the film is about a relationship that is deteriorating into domestic abuse for whatever reason, Micah still ran when Katie screamed for him. Most of all, I want to acknowledge that he died running to Katie's aid. ![]() I do think he makes some poor choices, even tasteless ones, but approached from the angle that he's responding to a type of relationship and abuse (of Katie, by the demon,) that he has no prior experience with. TL DR: Micah's an abusive boyfriend who kills his girlfriend in the classic escalation of domestic violence, starting with undermining and gaslighting, escalating to physical violence, and finally, both classic ends to violent domestic relationships: a man stabbed to death in his bed, and/or the woman disappears, presumed murdered or missing.ĮDIT: After discussing the movie and my interpretation with so many people, and especially with u/Body_Horror and u/Micah_Sloat, I want to say that I think I judged Micah too harshly given the circumstances the movie places the characters in. He looks at the spooky pictures and reads the first paragraph and boom! He's ready to take this thing to the mat. He casually flips through a book about demons and, once again, decides he can MMA this thing. Outside authorities can't be trusted! Micah is in control here, so he says. Whenever an outside expert is consulted Micah blows them off and prevents Katie from asking for help. Paranormal Activity is about the escalation of domestic violence and the gas lighting and undermining that go with it. ![]() She's the victim throughout, and Micah is the antagonist whose toxic energy fuels the conflict entirely. ![]() ![]() I know the movies go beyond and explore the back story a lot more, but in my mind, this movie is about a woman who had a toxic childhood (she notes that this has been going on since she was a kid and that her house burned down,) who has fallen into a toxic relationship that escalates the whole ordeal to the conclusion of the film. Not only does he film everything, often against Katie's wishes, he also tries to film them having sex and lies twice when he says the camera is off when she finally is DTF. He wants to use a ouija board to talk to the entity, so he takes that idea seriously enough to try it, but not seriously enough to research "best use" practices of a spirit board (I'm not saying I take them seriously myself, but if I was going to use it as a means of communicating with an obviously hostile entity, I'd at least like.fucking light a candle or something!) He lies by omission, makes promises he doesn't intend to keep, and acts like a macho asshole even after seeing an invisible entity set something on fucking fire.ĭuring episodes of the night where the demon is active he threatens and challenges it like he's going to fight a drunk dude at Chili's. He constantly undermines Katie and blows off her concerns. While the bass rumble clues you into something scary coming, a couple of times it comes out in places where nothing spooky necessarily happens.īut you know what? Let's talk about Micah. I love the understated filming and the total lack of a musical soundtrack.
